Blog Post 1 Digital Narrative

Students and teachers need technology in the classroom because it helps to make lives easier. Showing a video of osmosis while talking about osmosis in a science class allows students to visualize the process, and understand it better. As we live in a world of Technology it is important that students grow up with a sense of understanding technology so that they can continue to live in a world with technology.

I think that the ISTE standards are important for educators to understand. Not every teacher needs to be the most fluent Technology user but they should have some form of competency so that they can be on par with their students, and in turn, challenge their students. I personally resonate with the Designer Standard. As a Creative-minded person, I am going to strive to enable technology to present in my future classroom but to do it in creative ways. I do not want students to feel constricted to doing projects and papers in the same way they have been doing them before. I think that being an Analyst will be hard because I have never been good at analyzing data and understanding what is actually happening, and if I am making any changes. I think it could be hard for me to be subjective about data, and it can sometimes be hard to gauge what improvements have actually been made.

I think that Digital Native is a good term for today’s youth but I do not think that we should assume all digital natives have the same level of competency for technology. I think that Digital Native is just someone who grows up in an era where technology is more prominent and continuously growing. There are still issues with access to these technologies that prohibit every digital native from being completely fluent with technology. Growing up, even though I would probably be considered a digital native there were digital immigrants like my uncle who I went to for technology help. Now as an adult I have learned so much and there are so many technological realms in which I can probably my uncle in learning. I think Digital natives tend to be more receptive to change because we grew up in a time when technology was and still is consistently changing so that allows us to learn quickly if we’ve always had access to technology. Teachers who have not been the best with technology usually don't inhibit your actual learning experience but I do think it can inhibit your creativity. As a student, you may feel limited in what you can do if your teacher limits the way they teach. I anticipate that I will be on par with my students technologically, and in some ways more fluent. I say this because I have always been good with technology and have often had access to it, I don’t think that a lot of students that I foresee myself working with will have had the same access.
