I personally do not use Microsoft Word very often because I prefer Google Docs, as it saves automatically and can be accessed from anywhere. In the past, I have seen teachers use Microsoft Word to show information and create tests. I currently have a teacher who uses Word to create study guides and even the notes that we use in class. I think that word Documents tend to look bulky and wordy, so I rather see things in powerpoints and pdf documents. I think that word documents should only be used for writing papers and things of that nature because there is usually a much better technology that can do something.
In my EWM classes, we talk a lot about Copyright and Intellectual property, so I think I have some knowledge about it. In past projects, I have used the copyrighted property and just attained “educational use” to it so that I would not get into trouble. I think It’s important to have these rules in place but I also think that they should be fair. As a teacher, I would probably use copyrighted information but give credit where credit is due. I think in the educational sphere it is ok to use copyrighted information because it is most likely for a good purpose. Some students may not know how to or have access to create certain elements so using copyrighted information could also be helpful for projects and learning.
The Digital Divide is a big issue that I think students in the classroom will be facing. I would try to create assignments and projects that allowed them to use open and free resources, that the school may provide. I also think that allowing them to have open-ended projects that forced them to be creative would be a good idea so that they could do as they please with the resources that they have. As far as cyberbullying goes, I think it would be important to gain trust with students so that they may be open to telling you the things that are happening. I don’t think it’s ethical to monitor their social media, but I do think teachers could have some input into their social media in general. I think that teaching students about copyright would be a good way for them to learn and put it in practice. Giving them projects and assignments that required them to cite their sources and state why they needed that specific source.
I agree with your views on word. Normally if I have to do something or find a way to present i like to use other programs like powerpoint or docs. However, I most definitely see its value as an assignment/test maker and i can see myself utilizing it for so in the future.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that about Google Docs! I've only ever used Microsoft Word. That's awesome how it saves everything.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do tend to use Word more often than Google Docs, I completely agree with the fact that it is more convenient to use. It is also great for collaboration— in high school, my friends and i often used it to create study guides that linked all of our notes and thoughts, and also allowed for us to answer each other’s questions when we weren’t physically with each other!
